When we visit with the boys we are encouraged to do what is called Kangaroo Care. It is time that we get to spend holding the boys against our skin. It is very special time and is actually proven to be very beneficial to preemies. It helps to maintain their temperature while out of their isolettes (jokingly referred to as their little condos by the nurses), gain weight faster as they rest more calmly and don't burn calories by being fussy, and most importantly it helps them to bond with us. By the time we put them up, we are pretty warm ourselves...we have been told that our body temperature actually raises to help keep them warm. The boys seem to enjoy the time as much as we do...they start out wide awake and open their big eyes to see who's there, but by the end they have made themselves very cozy and are sound asleep. Here is a picture of just how comfortable Grant made himself in Daddy's arms (yes...he was covered in a blanket, we peeled it back to get this picture).

It's wonderful to see you holding your boys! The pictures of you both holding them this way are so precious. We had read an article about this when we were pregnant--that it raises babies IQ points even, so we figured, why not? Every night Thomas would take off his shirt, put Josiah on his chest, cover with a blanket and lay in the recliner. Such precious times! I know it feels like an eternity to you now, but it goes by SO fast.

ReplyDeleteWe are so happy for you. The boys look great! I am a FIRM BELIEVER in Kangaroo Care. Do it everyday, it makes a difference. I did it for Micah everyday for 2 months and he is doing wonderful now! Micah prays for the twins every night. He is so glad that "Miss Jessica" had her babies. Your family is in our prayers.
